What is subsistence agriculture and its relationship to sustainability?

Posted on May 16th, 2010 by admin in agriculture | 1 Comment »

I need to describe Subsistence agriculture and discuss its relationship to sustainability. I can’t find this in my book though. I know what sustainable agriculture is, but I’m guessing it isn’t the same as subsistence agriculture. Help someone?

Subsistence agriculture is farming that is done to provide food for the farmer. This as opposed to growing cash crops like cotton and tobacco where the farmer grows crops to sell for money.

How can the agriculture industry reach out to the public to gain their support on issues impacting agriculture?

Posted on May 13th, 2010 by admin in agriculture | 5 Comments »

How can the agriculture industry (producers, processors, etc.) reach out to the public to gain their support on important issues impacting agriculture?
•Environmental Preservation
•Animal Welfare
•Food Safety
•Energy Production

Education is key in getting consumers to understand what the issues are even about. Getting agriculture issues involved more in schools, talking about the issues through the media, and getting the nonsense that PETA and similar groups put into the consumer heads straightened out are some of the biggest factors. Consumers are extremely uneducated about a lot of ag issues, take for instance pesticides found on produce at the grocery store. The amount of pesticide that would have to be on the produce is A LOT to even make a person sick. Hormones given to dairy cattle- no tests have shown that they can lead to birth defects or cause cancer in humans. Information is taken and twisted so badly that consumers don’t even know what to believe.

Education and correct information given is the number one issue to consider when trying to get consumers to support ag issues.

How is agriculture in the South different from the agriculture in the Northeast?

How is agriculture in the South different from the agriculture in the Northeast?

In the South, a wider variety of crops can be grown due to the type of climate we have. Because of the longer growing season and warmer climate, some crops that can be grown in the North, can also be grown in the South- like corn or hay or wheat, etc.

Also, with the growing season/s being longer, like the other person said- in the South, two crops can be grown usually, while in the North, only one b/c of the harsh winters.

How does the development of agriculture lead to gender structures based on patriarchy?

and also how does agriculture lead to sedentary societies?
and/or
how does agriculture lead to specialization of labor?

This sounds like a question for the anthropology section.

What state has the largest animal agriculture?

Posted on May 5th, 2010 by admin in agriculture | 3 Comments »

I have to write an essay about the negative effects of animal agriculture but I have to be specific (geographically).
What state has the largest animal agriculture in the US?

More details about the topic would be great too!
Thank you.
Category
Science & Mathematics > Agriculture

It depends on the type of animal.

According to the Cattle Network, the state with the most cattle ranches is Texas, which has over twice as many head of cattle as number 2- Kansas.

The states which kill the most pigs are Iowa and North Carolina.
North Carolina, Minnesota and California kill the most turkeys.
Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia kill the most chickens.
